Volvox: Volvox is a polyphyletic

Brand : Volvox

Volvox: Volvox is a polyphyletic genus of chlorophyte green algae in the family Volvocaceae. These organisms usually form spherical colonies of up to 50,000 cells, which is why they are known as "globe algae." Volvox belongs to a larger group of multicellular species known as volvocine algae. Volvox is a genus of green algae containing around 20 species of freshwater algae. Thousands of cells together form colonies. There are around 500 to 60,000 cells in each colony of volvox. Leeuwenhoek was the first scientist to observe them in 1700. Volvox is widely studied to understand the process of morphogenesis. They live in freshwater habitats such as ponds, ditches, etc. The colour of the pond looks greenish due to the rapid growth of volvox. Occurrence of Volvox: Volvox is free floating fresh water green algae. Volvox grows as planktons on surface of water bodies like temporary and permanent ponds, lakes and water tanks. During rainy season due to its fast growth the surface of water bodies become green. The Volvox colonies appear as green rolling balls on surface of water. Volvox Volvox is a remarkable colonial green alga that consists of many individual cells living together in a spherical colony. 1.0 Systematic Position of Classification This Volvox classification places within the green algae division Chlorophyta, specifically within the class Chlorophyceae. The order Chlamydomonadales encompasses a variety of organisms with colonial structures, while the family Volvocaceae contains species related to Volvox. The genus Volvox represents a group of colonial ...
