Telugu has 18 vowels of which 3 are virtually phased out and hence do not have transliterations. Like other major Dravidian languages, the Telugu vowel set adds short /e/ and /o/ in addition to the long /eː/ and /oː/ of the Indo-Aryan languages. వీటిని అచ్చులు, హల్లులు, ఉభయాక్షారలుగా విభజించారు: పదహారు (16) అచ్చులు; ముప్ఫై ఎనమిది (38) హల్లులు; అనుస్వారము (సున్న), విసర్గ ఉభయాక్షరాలు (2). వాడుకలో లోని ఌ, ౡ, ౘ, ౙ వదలివేసి ఇరవై ఒకటవ శతాబ్దంలో యాభై రెండు (52) అక్షరాల వర్ణమాలను బోధిస్తున్నారు. చిన్నయ సూరి బాల వ్యాకరణం ప్రకారం దేశ్యమైన తెలుగుభాషకు వర్ణాలు ముప్ఫై ఆరు (36).
