Renowned Environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna: At the age of just 13, Sunderlal Bahuguna had such a passion to do something different, saying that Amar Shaheed came in contact with Shreve Suman. Thereafter, he led several other movements against rebellion against Tehri Riyasat, including liquor ban, Chipko movement, anti-Tehri dam movement, and did unmatched work for environmental protection. Environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna Sunderlal Bahuguna was an Indian environmentalist and Chipko movement leader who fought for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas. He also led the anti-Tehri Dam movement and inspired other ecological movements in India and abroad. Sunderlal Bahuguna was born on January 9, 1927, in the village of Maroda near Tehri, in present-day Uttarakhand (then part of British India). Growing up amidst the pristine beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas, he developed a deep connection with nature from childhood. Bahuguna died on Friday, May 21, 2021, at the age of 94 from complications of Covid-19. “Sunderlal Bahuguna carried the Chipko Movement’s message of environmental protection and non-violent resistance to India’s national stage,” said Ole von Uexkull, Executive Director of the Right Livelihood Foundation.
