R. D. Burman filmography The following is a select filmography of films for which Rahul Dev Burman (27 June 1939 – 4 January 1994), also known as R. D. Burman , composed the soundtracks. He was one of the most prolific Indian movie score / soundtrack composers of the Indian film industry: Rahul Dev Burman , better known as R.D. Burman , was a famous Bollywood music director during the 60’s through the early 90’s. He was known for introducing an upbeat, Western copied music that defined much of the music of the 1970’s. This style has influenced generations of music directors even to today. R.D. Burman , the music composer from India was affectionately called “Pancham Da” in Bollywood circles. His unique style involved incorporating the note “pa” (the note in Indian classical music) extensively in his songs, which led to a significant transformation in the landscape of Indian cinema music and cemented his esteemed position within the industry. S D Burman also used R D ’s tune for Sar jo tera chakraye (Pyasa, 1957). R D used to attend music sessions at his father’s recordings, soon to join him as his assistant. All these experiences helped R D Burman to lend breadth and depth to his music and build a network of highly innovative musicians.
