O n India’s 75th year of Independence, who do we thank? It is Pingali Venkayya (2 August 1876 – 4 July 1963), who designed the Swaraj Flag, later modified into the Tricolour Flag of India. He painted India with the vibrant colours of saffron, white and green on the canvas of courage, sacrifice, patriotism, and renunciation. Multi-faceted Pingali was a lecturer, author, geologist, educationalist, agriculturist, polyglot, teacher, linguist, freedom fighter, staunch Gandhian and devoted ... Pingali Venkayya , born in a small Andhra village, designed the tricolour that became India’s national flag. A freedom fighter, scholar and visionary, he researched dozens of global flags before presenting his design to Gandhi in 1921. Pingali Venkayya was an Indian freedom fighter and the person behind the design of the Indian National Flag. The tricolour pattern in our Flag was his idea to uphold the three pillars of Indian democracy- saffron symbolising strength, courage and sacrifice, white indicating peace and truth (Dharma Chakra- progress), and green symbolising growth, fertility, and auspiciousness. Though Pingali Venkayya ’s contribution to the freedom struggle of India is rarely spoken of, if you are preparing ... Pingali Venkayya was an Indian freedom fighter and designer of the Indian National Flag. He was given titles like 'Japan Venkayya ', 'Patti (cotton) Venkayya ' and 'Jhanda Venkayya '. He also published a book in 1916 offering thirty designs of what could make the Indian flag.
