According to the latest figures released by the Registrar General of India - Sample Registration System (RGI-SRS), the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) for the period 2020-22 is 88 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. From 2000 to 2023, the global maternal mortality ratio (MMR) declined by 40 per cent – from 328 deaths to 197 deaths per 100,000 live births, according to UN inter-agency estimates. This translates into an average annual rate of reduction of 2.2 per cent.
