On February 20, 1947, King George VI, on the advice of British PM Clement Attlee, appointed Lord Louis Mountbatten as India’s last Viceroy of India and gave him the responsibility of overseeing the transfer of power to India from Britain. Born to privilege, Mountbatten was a hard-working career public servant who did not always please everyone (such as Canadians, following the controversial Dieppe Raid of August 19, 1942). However, when he died, he was a popular figure in Britain. Lord Louis Mountbatten © Mountbatten was a British naval officer who oversaw the defeat of the Japanese offensive towards India during World War Two. Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten , 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, was a British statesman and naval officer who served as India's last Viceroy and the country's first Governor-General.
