Iltutmish was the real founder of the Delhi Sultanate, establishing Delhi as the capital and gaining recognition from the Abbasid Caliph. He expanded and consolidated the empire, introduced the iqta system, and built a strong administrative setup. Shams ud-Din Iltutmish [a] (1192 – 30 April 1236) was the third Sultan of Delhi from 1211 to 1236. He was from the Mamluk dynasty, who ruled the former Ghurid territories in northern India. He was the first Muslim sovereign to rule from Delhi, and is thus considered the effective founder of the Delhi Sultanate. Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was among the most important rulers of the slave dynasty. He was the slave who rose and earned the position of Sultan based on sheer merit. He captured the throne in 1211 after he dethroned and murdered the incapable ruler Aram Shah.
