Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai , a seasoned jurist with nearly four decades in the legal field, is set to become the 52nd Chief Justice of India ( CJI ) on May 14, 2025. His tenure will last until his retirement on November 23, 2025. The current CJI , Sanjiv Khanna, recommended Gavai as his successor on 16th April, 2025. BR will be the second individual from the Scheduled Caste community to hold this esteemed position, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan. Justice BR Gavai took oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on Wednesday, and will serve as the CJI for six months. If you think this is a short tenure, consider that the first possible woman CJI will serve for just 36 days. Yet, her tenure will not be the shortest as CJI . Justice Kant is set to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India following the recommendation as he is the senior most judge in the Supreme Court after CJI Gavai .
