A chromosome is a package of DNA containing part or all of the genetic material of an organism. In most chromosomes, the very long thin DNA fibers are coated with nucleosome -forming packaging proteins; in eukaryotic cells, the most important of these proteins are the histones. Chromosomes are present as thread like structures packed inside the nucleus of a plant cell or animal cell. Each chromosome is made up of protein and a single molecule of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Chromosomes Chromosomes are long strings of DNA wrapped around proteins to make them compact. They’re a way for cells to organize and store your DNA. Humans typically have 23 pairs of chromosomes for a total of 46 chromosomes . The first 22 are called autosomes and the last pair are sex chromosomes . Chromosomes are thin, thread like structures present in the nucleus and visible during all division. Each chromosome is made up of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and proteins.
